Acepromazine is an effective treatment for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who have a depressive episode and who have a significant personal distress. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of celexa, an anxiolytic, on the patients' emotional state after discontinuation of the drug for 12 weeks. Patients were randomized to one of the following groups: placebo, a single dose of celexa, celexa plus divalproex (VdP); or celexa alone (DVPA). The patients were followed up for 12 weeks, to ascertain any adverse effects, which could affect their emotional states. Data on the occurrence of adverse effects were analyzed using the data analysis software program. The mean time to the occurrence of any adverse event was 1.2 +/- 0.8 years in the VdP group (P = 0.02). The mean number of adverse events was 6.5 +/- 3.9 in the placebo group (P = 0.02). The mean time to discontinuation of Celexa was 4.9 +/- 0.8 years (P = 0.01). There were no differences in the occurrence of depressive episodes, depressed mood, or somatic disorders between the groups. The frequency of adverse effects in patients treated with celexa was lower than in those treated with placebo. This study shows that Celexa, an anxiolytic, may have an effect on patients' emotional states after discontinuation of the drug for 12 weeks. This effect is important because the patients taking Celexa and the treatment groups treated with Divalproex may have similar emotional state after discontinuation of the drug for 12 weeks.
